Skeletal Prostheses

SKELETAL PROSTHESES

It is not possible to make a fixed prosthesis in the classical sense for patients who have lost a large number of teeth and especially those who do not have teeth behind the extracted teeth . These patients can have an implant- supported fixed prosthesis or a skeletal prosthesis with support from the remaining teeth. Skeletal prostheses are removable prostheses. It should be removed and cleaned by the patient after meals, and also before going to sleep at night.

There are two different systems applied to ensure retention in these prostheses .

1st system; It is a type of removable prosthesis applied by supporting the existing teeth in the mouth with metal clasps . These crochets are popularly called hooks. The most important problem with these prostheses is the discomfort and retention problem caused by the appearance of these clasps surrounding the tooth. It also creates hygiene problems.

2.system; The other type of retaining part is the type of prosthesis we call precision attachment prosthesis . This prosthesis is also called snap prosthesis among the public . Precision-attached prostheses both increase stabilization and look more aesthetically pleasing. For sensitive attached dentures called snap dentures , some teeth are coated with porcelain and sensitive retainers (snaps) are placed on the porcelain teeth.

Skeletal prostheses ;

-In addition to being attached to the remaining teeth, it is also designed to sit on the palate and is held on to the teeth with metal hooks, these hooks help the prosthesis stay firmly in place.

-Artificial teeth form part of the prosthetic base made of acrylic and metal materials.

-Skeletal prostheses have the capacity to damage gums, teeth and other oral tissue if they are not made well. More accurately, when used for longer than necessary, surrounding tissues may be damaged due to impaired harmony.

-Skeletal dentures encourage plaque accumulation, especially where the natural teeth and the denture meet. A well-designed prosthesis can minimize this situation.

-Denture teeth are made of acrylic or porcelain.

Diseased dental tissues and gums must be treated before skeletal prostheses are installed. A crown (porcelain) must be applied to the teeth to which the skeletal prosthesis will be attached with a hook. However, since this increases the cost of treatment, it is not preferred by patients. This shortens the life of the prosthesis .

When the denture is first placed in your mouth, it may take some time to get used to it and you may experience minor difficulties. It will be very beneficial to feed only soft foods in the beginning. This is very important so that the chewing muscles, cheek and tongue can adapt to the prosthesis .

skeletal prostheses :

Skeletal prostheses are removable prostheses. In other words, they are prostheses that can be put on and removed by the patient . While a part of the prosthesis clings to the natural teeth (clasp), the other part sits on the palate. Unfortunately, food accumulation may occur in these areas. Skeletal prostheses should be removed and cleaned after each meal. Additionally, natural teeth should be brushed. Normal toothbrush and paste should not be used to clean dentures. You can wash the prosthesis with hand soap, or special brushes and pastes can be used to clean the prosthesis .

Skeletal prostheses should be removed before sleeping. It should be cleaned as we have just explained and preferably placed in a closed container with water and left in it. It would also be beneficial to add denture cleaning tablets into this water . These tablets stop the growth of bacteria on the prosthesis and prevent your prosthesis from smelling.

Skeletal prostheses are made using acrylic and porcelain materials on a metal substructure. Although they are very resistant to pressure and chewing forces, they can easily break if they fall on hard surfaces. It is especially important to be careful during washing.
